Some cyclists are triathletes

This past week triathlon has been on our radar. To be more specific the Women’s Ironman Championships in Kona. We appreciate the ability of triathletes to go out and do a monster bike ride and sandwich that effort between a rigorous swim and ungodly run. We also appreciate their gear and the fact that many of them have some fairly impressive pain cave setups. We decided to ignore the whole cycling without socks as well as the issue of nature breaks in order to focus on the common ground we share: a love of bikes.

We are suckers for a story that tells us what happened at the back of a race, away from the pointy end of the peloton, in the grupetto, or in the DNF lists. In fact, our OTB Vuelta Race Report feature such stories, so we were very interested in reading The DNF Files for the Women’s Ironman Championships from Triathlete. An Ironman is a daunting discipline in an already formidable sport, so never a shock to hear plenty of racers were not able to finish the race. This article adds some humanity to the DNF list.

The four-times runner up, Lucy Charles-Barclay won the Ironman World Championship in Kona last weekend and broke a course record.
