Issue 27

This week we mostly road the bike trainer and snuck in a small cheeky ride outside towards the end of the week. Obviously the bike trainer makes it very easy for us to control the environment of our training ride, especially since we have plenty of fans and windows in the climate-controlled room where our trainer is set up. If we want it hot and humid, we can do that. Cold and breezy, no problem. Well lit or dark, that’s an option too. The only variable out of our control is how often our kid will need us to get them a snack during our session. On the road, it’s a different scenario. Many variables are out of our control. Interestingly enough, that is one aspect of cycling we often find enjoyable because we appreciate variety in what we experience on the bike. Nevertheless, recently we’ve been considering the other, more concerning variables. We curious how the change in seasons, temperatures, and light is impacting your leisure and training rides and bike commutes. You can read our featured article and then drop us a DM on our socials.

Safety on the road is an elaborate equation filled with many variables. As a cyclist, you have control of many of those variables: where you ride, how you ride, when you ride, what conditions you ride in, what kit you use and don’t use. Other variables are often out of your control: how other road users behave, road infrastructure (unless you’re also a city planner), and to a certain degree weather. Earlier this week, as we were browsing winter kit options, we were considering different jackets with various hi-viz patterns and features because being seen in these low-light months is important to enjoying a safe ride. Having spent time looking at such kit options lead us eventually to be drawn towards this opinion article by Velo about hi-viz clothing and who bears the weight of responsibility for cyclists safety.

One of our favorite times of year is happening: new kit reveals. UAE has revealed their new look. Bahrain Victorious have also debuted their new kit. We’re adding a ride around Andalusia, Spain, to our bucket list. WvA won his first cyclocross race of the season at Essen. Guillaume Martin has won a literary prize for his book La Société du peloton: Philosophie de l’individu dans le groupe.
