Willkie Sprint by Kerry Hellmuth is a book for those who are a fans of the 1979, Oscar-winning movie Breaking Away which told the story of a plunky underdog’s attempt at overcoming the odds by winning the Little 500 (a race held at the University of Indiana). The movie was cycling’s answer to the movie Rudy (American college football) and Hoosiers (American high school basketball), and together they made a trio of classic sports movies set in midwestern (read: small-town) America. Unlike the heroes of these movies, Willkie Sprint features real-life characters who overcome precedent to be the first all-female time to enter and competing in the Little 500. To find out more about this engaging story, check out our PEZ Cycling News (our source for all things pertaining to the US racing scene) and read their book review on Willkie Sprint.
