To the casual viewer, watching a Grand Tour bike race can be confusing. There are different jerseys with different level of significance. There are mid-stage sprints and bonus seconds and breakaways and winners and losers and folks who might not win a stage but are winning the race. Lost time, gained time, and Didi the Devil. Fortunately, there’s always beautiful scenery and cinematic vistas to distract us from all of that uninteresting tedium. There’s also Johnny Long’s article for Escape Collective, explaining all of the unwritten rules of the Tour de France. This may not be an exhaustive explainer, but it does get us in the mood to watch the Tour this coming weekend.
